Description:
The Housing Authority of Cook County will soon open a waiting list for project-based voucher units designed to provide affordable housing to disabled residents, Housing Authority officials recently announced.
There will be 42 one- and two-bedroom units available at sites scattered across Bellwood, Berwyn, Forest Park and Maywood within the next 12 months, officials said. The units are part of a project called Access West Cook.
As part of the project, residents are eligible for project-based vouchers that subsidize 70 percent of the rent. In order to be eligible, the “head of household, co-head or spouse must have a verifiable disability” and must not make more than 50 percent of the area median income (AMI).
The AMI is $29,650, $33,850, $38,100 and $42,300 for one-, two-, three- and four-person households, respectively. Some units are restricted to households that don’t exceed an extremely low income limit, which ranges from $17,800 for a one-person household to $25,400 for a four-person household.
Three of the three-unit buildings in the Access West Cook project are located in Maywood and could be completed by the spring, said Maywood Village Manager Willie Norfleet in an interview earlier this year. The homes are located at 1902, 2009, 2024 and 2032 South 5th Avenue.
The Maywood Board of Trustees unanimously approved zoning changes last year in order for Chicago-based real estate developer IFF to complete the homes.
According to Housing Authority officials, applicants who are currently on the Authority’s Housing Choice Voucher wait list, who are “literally homeless,” who are “veterans,” or victims of “domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking” will take priority.
The Authority will start accepting completed applications by mail or email only beginning on Wednesday, March 13, at 10 a.m. Applications that are submitted before then will be rejected, officials said. The wait list will stay open until the Authority receives 50 completed applications.
